The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck.
I haven't found much time for reading with the play and all but as I understand it so far, the story centers around the Joad family, who are moving west to California after the big banks kicked them off their land to grow cotton. The main character appears to be Tom Joad, who went to jail for killing a man, and got out on parole. he returns the his home to find everything changed, and his family getting ready to leave. I am still not sure of what events or challenges will befall the Joad family, but I think they will be very interesting.
